During Ubisoft’s press conference, developer Ben Mattis took the stage to demo the new Prince of Persia and narrate a play-through of one of the earlier levels of the game. I didn’t get to actually play, but watching him definitely gave me a feel for what the new Prince of Persia has to offer. The graphics, of course, are fantastic, and the new illustrative style gives Okami a run for its money when it comes to style.

Elika, the Prince’s cooperative companion, fills many roles throughout the game. When the developers first explained that she would follow the Prince without encumbering him I was reluctant to believe it, but watching the gameplay made me realize that she not only doesn’t hinder him, but actually helps. She serves as more of an extension of the Prince, teleporting in front of the him to throw him to a ledge, aiding him in combat, and even eliminating death from the game by bringing him back to the most recent safe platform.

The developers said that they didn’t believe that gamers needed the reassurance of a death screen to remind them that they fell off a cliff, and have instead decided to have Elika pull you to a safe platform if you fall. It isn’t really any different from reloading from a previous checkpoint, but it prevents the need to have the game reload all of the data after an obnoxious “YOU HAVE DIED” screen pops up.

Combat was featured in the video, which appears to be a combination of the previous game’s fighting and Assassin’s Creed’s combat. It is sort of strange to see the Assassin’s Creed engine taken to a supernatural and magical world, because the game definitely retains a little bit from its Mature-rated brother in crime. Early in the press conference Ben Mattis said that the early buzz for the game was that it was a game of the year contender and I laughed at that claim, at the end of the video I think that it isn’t as crazy as I originally thought.


Before Kojima Productions and Konami get Hideo Kojima that editor he so desperately needs, perhaps the company should hire someone who knows how to launch an online multiplayer game. The Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion" was released yesterday and promptly melted Konami's servers, resulting in the closure of the game's MGO Shop and Reward Shop and difficulty logging in to the service. Some MGO players have reported paying for the new expansion and getting nothing in return.

Konami's solution to some of these issues was to restrict random IP ranges from accessing the shops, in an effort to lighten the load.

The company has also cancelled all Metal Gear Online "Survival" battles planned for this weekend, promising to have a new hamster wheel installed to power the servers as soon as is technically possible.


Of the big 3, Sony always seems to be the one having trouble making course corrections. Take the E3 God of War III trailer this year. Time and time again Sony makes the mistake of putting out CGI only trailers. Killzone 2 is looking to be decent, but that CGI trailer has put so many people off. Instead we’re over looking at what Insomniac is doing with Nathan Hale. Not that a CGI trailer would hurt God of War. While popular among gamers, the series has never done mega blockbuster sales. Far better than average, but nothing that would cause Call of Duty or Halo to look over their shoulders. But it does well, and that's because the games are fantastic.

With all of that baggage we come to the God of War III trailer. It wasn’t a surprise announcement to anybody, and it was certainly less embarrassing than the Wii Music fiasco over at Nintendo’s conference. This was a full on formal announcement of the game, nothing more. I can accept that. But with the recent past being what it is Sony should have pushed to have at least a few seconds of gameplay in the trailer.

Let’s be honest, the trailer itself wasn’t that good anyways. I’d rather have seen some slightly janky gameplay then CGI rendered Kratos on top of a pile of rubble, but maybe that’s just me. The game will likely be good, but Sony’s presentation of it leaves much to be desired. They should realize that the power of the PS3 doesn’t just lay in the ability to create pretty CGI cutscenes. There’s a lot of horsepower to show off gameplay and innovation the other 2 consoles can’t hope to achieve. In the end there isn’t chaos, only disappointment.

Namco Bandai's upcoming Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is such a surprising treat. The PS3 exclusive has earned a lot of attention due to its fantastic graphics, but Ninja Storm features far more than just a pretty face. We had a chance to play a more expansive build at Namco Bandai's E3 booth, where we took a sneak peak at the game's elusive single player mode and got some hands-on time with the multiplayer.

Naruto's adventure begins just like it does in the manga. A cool treat for fans will be the inclusion of both Japanese and English audio for the story. From the looks of things, all the dialogue in the game may be spoken. While the lip-syncing was very off, we're hoping it can be fixed before Naruto's upcoming holiday release. The adventure will have Naruto exploring the Hidden Leaf village, much like in the Xbox 360 Naruto game. He'll have to talk to various villagers to progress the story, unlock missions and goals. Surprisingly, the first PS3 Naruto game covers a lot of territory: we were told that the game's story will go all the way up to the Sasuke Retrieval arc.

The build we got to play with had other characters, such as Sasuke and Gaara. However, we weren't allowed to take a glimpse at the entire roster. Undoubtedly, all the series favorites will be available. We played against a Namco PR representative in a battle: we played as Sasuke, he played as Naruto. Just like in the public demo, the graphics look rather lush. The stylized explosions in particular look rather nice. Our build had some unfortunate aliasing problems, which is blamed by this build's early state (the public demo looks much more polished). The delay after being knocked back is still a bit too significant -- hopefully, the Naruto team will be able to change that before the game's release.

One new thing we were able to do in this E3 build was enter Sasuke's second state. After charging enough chakra, we were able to transform into a much deadlier Sasuke -- we were shooting fireballs, and moved with lightning-fast speed. It wasn't long before the PR rep fell, defeated.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm is a lot of fun, and with its beautiful graphics and extensive single player story, we're sure it'll appeal to both Naruto fans and non-fans alike. With just a few tweaks, we can see it becoming a great (offline) multiplayer addition to any PS3 collection.

esterday we found out we are getting trophies, and today we might have the release dates. If the official online store for Rock Band franchise rockbandstore.com is to be believed, we have two different release dates for Rock Band 2 on our hands. The regular edition with just the game will be out on November 30th, according to the pre-order page. While first time rockers and those who have the dough for another set of plastic instruments will start jammin' away sooner on October 19th.

These dates correspond with what we saw on Amazon before, who also has both versions for pre-order, with the Special Edition even-so-slightly cheaper at $10 off. How do you guys feel about this? The Xbox 360 versions will arrive the same day in September. Is this Harmonix's way of making more money off impatient PS3 owners? Though at least we aren't Wii owners, who will have to wait till November 18th to get any version of the game.


Trophies are rather new for the PS3 audience. In fact, only one game on the market right now supports them. But, will things change in the future? The answer looks to be "yes." First party titles are all required to have Trophy support, but in 2009, all Trophies may become "mandated." One major developer told Joystiq that Sony may require Trophies in all third party games.

In addition, Trophies may be required to be different from Xbox 360 Achievements. "We've heard some things that make it sound like we will have to do some unique to PS3 Trophies ... this is all very new to us." It won't be long until more games release, and gamers flock to get the highest PlayStation Level possible.


The third and final day of E3 PSN updates is here. New content today includes two full games, one of which is the classic PS1 game, Rayman. If you were so looking forward to a Soulcalibur IV demo out before the game's release on July 29, then get ready for disappointment. Namco reps at E3 have stated that a demo of the game won't be available until after release. As to when that demo would be available, the only response received was that it would appear some time "down the road." Last time we checked, Soulcalibur IV was a 'first day purchase' kind of game; by then, who needs a demo?

In related news, a press release sent out earlier today cordially announced that Soulcalibur IV had gone gold. There's only 12 days left Soulcalibur fans -- only 12 more days.


Guess what? PS3 sold pretty well because of this "Metal Gear" game. The PS3-exclusive and limited edition 80GB bundle accelerated sales to over 400k. PS3 sold 405,488 systems, 84% higher than the Xbox 360. Year-over-year sales in June went up 311%, and month-over-month growth went up 94%.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was the best-selling video game, with 774,647 units sold. More than 2.4 million software units were sold for PS3 in June, representing an increase of more than 300% from this time last year. (Software totals do not include software units sold as part of the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 retail bundle).

The incredible success of the PS3 this month shouldn't come as a surprise. We really hope that Sony will be able to continue the momentum of the PlayStation brand in the coming months with its upcoming holiday lineup. Sony's official word, after the break.

Usually, a venue like E3 proves to be a bad venue for a game like Silent Hill Homecoming. The usual hustle and bustle of the E3 show floor makes for a game focused squarely on atmosphere to suffer. So, why was our playtest of Silent Hill Homecoming in a closed room with headphones so uninspiring? There are a number of issues that come to the top of our minds: the lackluster graphics stand out, for once. However, the most frustrating aspect of Homecoming is how familiar it all felt. Returning to Silent Hill on consoles after an adventure like Silent Hill IV: The Room is strange. Regardless of the execution found in that last Silent Hill title, one couldn't deny the interesting premise which took the series in a slightly different direction. Homecoming, on the other hand, plays it safe and feels like an HD remake of Silent Hill Origins (PSP).

For those that are hankering for a new Silent Hill game, perhaps this by-the-numbers offering will satiate that itch. However, the setting is much too familiar, and the setup is just not that compelling. Waking up strapped down in a hospital bed, our protagonist Alex Shephard must break free and find clues on his missing brother. Combat works just as it has before: lock on and swing various melee weapons found in the environment.

Once again, Alex will find an endless array of locked doors and must navigate a convulted series of delapidated passages to solve random puzzles that get in the way. There are a few things of note that make the adventure a bit more intuitive. The map is taken from Origins, and informs you of where you've already been. The added physics engine makes interacting with the environment even creepier than before: walking into a bottle may make it fall down and the sudden noise may cause you to jump. Of course, the sound design and music are just as incredible as ever.

If it were five years ago, we may be glad to see the inclusion of QTE elements in Silent Hill Homecoming. Players will interact with certain objects and on-screen indicators will have players mashing the corresponding buttons. While the added drama is appreciated, it's far from revolutionary.

The monsters we've seen in the game range from the familiar to the dramatic. All of the enemies we encountered were animated beautifully (if beauty is synonymous as grotesque). One particular enemy stood out above others: a smog creature that has a glowing red lung. It thrust around violently, moving erratically. The music got our pulse pumping as we tried to shoot at its much-too-obvious weak point.

Unfortunately, the build we played on PS3 was rather unstable. At random times it would crash. After two crashes, it got a little too frustrating to repeat the same sections over again. Obviously, Konami will fix this before the game's release later this year. For fans of the franchise, Silent Hill Homecoming may offer everything they need. However, after so many iterations, we can't help but feel like this is a tired game.


In addition to new DLC for MGO today, Konami has released two camouflages for your OctoCamo in Metal Gear Solid 4 for those of us who wish to keep our adventures offline. Like the Laughing and Raging camos, the Crying and Screaming camos are each imbued with the respective emotion. When Snake puts one of these babies on, approaching an enemy and placing them in a CQC hold and letting them go will result in either crying or screaming. You can download them from the Extras section of MGS4's main menu. Have fun!


At a conference with game writers at E3, SCEA boss Jack Tretton spoke about Sony's feelings toward the announcement that a flagship title, Final Fantasy XIII, will also see a simultaneous release on the Xbox 360. His feelings: "Am I disappointed by it? Yes ... Am I surprised? No." We suppose we shouldn't be too surprised either. With the cost of game development growing as it is, holding onto third-party franchises is much more difficult. The game is still PS3-only in Japan, but we should really expect this generation to revolve around first-party developers. Everything else will more likely than not see release on more than one platform.


Our buddies over at Massively got a chance to talk to Creative Director Chris Cao and SOE-Austin VP of development John Blakely about how DC Universe Online will interact with the PS3. Those who are concerned about patches for the PS3 having delays compared to the PC game might have some cause. Depending on the update, "there will probably always be an additional level of scrutiny and certification when going to the PLAYSTATION Network, especially when we change the actual executable," so any delays would be due to that. They added that if it is just content or data on the server, there shouldn't be any lag.

Blakely also tells us of random tests they did where players were given a PC setup and a PS3 controller to play DCUO. They "were able to kind of switch between the two and have a good time." They also looking to have a simultaneous launch of both version of the game. Blakely is also promising complete interoperability between the two platforms -- but long term plans might change. "We want to make sure that we don't bind the two. We want to make sure they're able to work with each other. If we can get proven and comfortable with that, then we'll do that. Our friends over at Engadget sat down to talk with SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, who questioned him about things on just about every PS3 owner's mind. Regarding backwards compatibility, Tretton saw the lack of it as a way to cut production costs, and even though implementing BC isn't particularly expensive, the company wants to be "selling PS2 software to PS2 customers, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers." He does express some hesitation about this though. "I would like to have had it in there, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it. We've now gone down that road, and we're not going back."

With the new PS Store video service, some were dismayed to find that their video purchases could not be transferred to anything except for their PSP. Tretton feels this is absolutely necessary and that it " is way too hard a business to make money in to allow people to own multiple copies for the price of one." He's "all for allowing an individual consumer having the freedom to do with their content what they want," but Sony has no plans to remove the current restrictions.

As for Home, the problems are arising because of "the disconnect of when Sony took Home out of the creative minds and put it the hands of business minds..." Tretton would rather have Home ready at a much later time with good content, than open it now as "some ghost town."

You may have read about our E3 coverage regarding Home -- specifically learning the virtual world will be region locked. Even so, there are plenty of things to do in Home as this developer walkthrough video shows. Fun activities for all, but regrettably, we won't be able to enjoy said diversions with our pals across the ocean. Any ocean. You can invite them into your personal apartment, though. Maybe down the line an option will be added for you to place an arcade machine, chess board, or more in your apartment. We'll see.


Eurogamer had a long chat with David Reeves at the SCEE event yesterday, and discussed Europe's "day and date" releases for the PS3's upcoming library for the rest of the year. He also mentions the 2009 lineup, mentioned that "coming in spring will be inFamous and MAG, and God of War [3] will be coming later in 2009," giving a vague indication of when we can expect to see the newly announced MAG. Something that wasn't mentioned at the Sony Press Conference.

With inFamous, MAG and God of War 3 all appearing in 2009, the year is shaping up quite nicely. But will they all really make it? And will MAG really launch with such a ridiculous name as Massive Action Game? We'll find out in a year.


Despite launching on the same day it was announced in the US, Europeans will not be enjoying the PS Store video service in 2008. David Reeves, President of SCEE, made the announcement at a SCEE event yesterday, but both him and Howard Stringer promises that it "will come to all regions in due course" and that additional information regarding dates, content or pricing will come later this year. Reeves attributes the delay to localization of the service in regards to content. No word yet on any other territories.

Not till 2009?! That's a long time to wait for all the Europeans out there -- does Go!View provide any consolation? Tell us what you think.


Were you one of those people that skipped Prologue to wait for the full version of Gran Turismo 5? Get ready to wait. In an interview with Joystiq, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi stated that the full version of GT5 "might not even roll out before 2010." Instead, Prologue will continue to be expanded upon, with additional cars, tracks and features. In fact, a new update is planned for the "near future." The big question we have though is: will it be free?

Perhaps Gran Turismo 5 would wrap up production a bit sooner if Yamauchi and crew wasn't so adamant about filming an entire series for Gran Turismo TV. Have fun driving those Ferraris Yamauchi ... while the rest of us wait years for your next game.


Today's PSN update will feature the Metal Gear Online "Gene Expansion." It will come in two varieties, starting at $11.99. The basic expansion will add Meryl and Akiba as playable characters, and three new maps:

Coppertown Conflict -- Wide streets, underground passages, and rooftop areas that are ideal for close to medium range combat.

Tomb of Tubes
-- An intricate labyrinth of underground passages that are ideal for close to medium range combat.

Virtuos Vista
-- An outdoor map with natural terrain that is ideal for medium to long range combat.

In addition, there will be a new "Survival Mode" and you will be able to create a custom female character. For $14.99, players will also get an additional character slot.

If paying money doesn't suit your tastes, Konami is still adding free DLC to the Metal Gear Online experience today. Metal Gear Online will also be updated with MGOnline Reward Points and an in-game shop. By playing the game, filling out questionairres and winning tournaments, players will earn Reward Points which can be used to unlock new gear for your character. This will be available for all players of Metal Gear Online.

Another day of E3 has comes and goes and brings with it more content for the PSN store. Today's update features a whole bunch of videos, including the first part of the Sony Press Conference, various montage videos and trailers of the potentially excellent Mirror's Edge and Dead Space. Where are all the PS1 games? We chatted with SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida about the lack of PS1 downloadable titles in America, and he admitted it frankly: "I'd like to see more games on that as well ... we haven't done enough with third party publishers."

In Japan, companies like Square Enix and Konami have supported the PSN by re-releasing treasured PS1 classics onto the PS Store. However, the rest of the world's catalog has been quite lacking. Yoshida explained that these digital downloads don't offer much profit, calling the potential monies "insignificant." He also noted that there are many issues involving licensing, especially with the music found in older games. That usually adds to the difficulty of bringing back PS1 games.

While lamenting the lack of PS1 support on the PSN, he did ask us a favor: "Maybe if you can convince the third parties."


While single player has always been the focus of Killzone 2 at its various press showings, today was all about one thing: multiplayer. Too bad we have to wait until early 2009 for its release, because what we've seen looks like everything PS3 fans have been waiting for. We don't want to use the phrase "Halo killer," because that's not what it is. It's something entirely different; we can't help but think that Killzone 2 may become the definitive PS3-exclusive shooter. Killzone 2's multiplayer experience is something entirely different ... by combining the best aspects of multiplayer gaming from Call of Duty 4, Battlefield, Team Fortress Online, Metal Gear Online and even the upcoming Resistance 2.

Firstly, we have to note the visuals of Killzone 2's multiplayer mode. Even with support of up to 32 players on the PSN, Killzone 2 looks just as good online as it does in the single player campaign. The character models still look incredible, and the game's stellar use of motion blur and lighting still carries on into the online mode. The experience of Killzone 2's multiplayer offerings is all about leveling up, introducing players to new features. Newbies to the game's online mode will find themselves limited in the options they can access, as they learn the basics of the gameplay. With each kill, headshot, heal, and objective, players inch closer to increasing ranks. Ranks will unlock various things in multiplayer, like the ability to start a clan, or switch to a different, more customizable class. There will be twelve ranks in all, and players will learn new tactics and strategies along the way.

Leveling up is one of the most addictive aspects of Call of Duty 4's multiplayer -- just look at the Double XP weekends that Infinity Ward runs. However, the game's impressive stats-tracking will reward players for more than just kills. Exceling in certain attributes will progress players closer to certain medals and ribbons, which will further unlock additional abilities for the player. It's a lot like Metal Gear Online: do one particular action frequently, and you'll find your in-game character will become much better at it.

As we discussed earlier in the day, the class system of Killzone 2 reminds us a lot of Team Fortress 2. But, that's not a bad thing at all. In fact, there's even more depth to this system, thanks to the ability to mix and match various abilities from different classes. Want to be a Medic Saboteur? Go for it. Want to be a Tactician Scout? Go for it. Because of the large scale of these team-based battles, the choices you make will greatly affect the outcome of the game. Seeing so many abilities combined really opens up a lot of gameplay variety.

Communication and teamwork will be key to victory, and that's why Guerrilla Games is spending so much time on creating squads and clans. Squads can be formed anytime in a match, and these four-man teams will be able to communicate directly to each other. Taking a page from Battlefield, one person can be assigned position of class leader, and so long as that leader is alive, the squad will be able to respawn right next to the leader. This means progression to a map can be easier, so long as the squad communicates and keeps their leader alive. There are strategic advantages to this, such as letting a certain member sacrifice himself to let the leader go on further. Once the fallen member respawns, he will gain all the progress his leader has made.

Clans are going to be big in Killzone 2, and Guerrilla is smartly giving clans "valor points," an in-game currency which can be bet during competitions against other clans. Both teams can place in 500 valor, for example, and the winning team will be able to net 1000 valor, while the loser walks away in shame. We can see squads trying to recruit the best, as they attempt a perilous climb to the top of the Killzone leaderboards.

The comunity features of Killzone 2 won't probably be as comprehensive as the ones being developed for SOCOM Confrontation, but there certainly will be quite a lot to see and do. Extensive stats tracking, tournaments, ladders, and a huge variety of achievements will keep players coming for more. If the in-game community features aren't enough, Guerrilla also has the killzone.com portal which will give players access to all their in-game stats and info.

Killzone 2 is going to be a fun multplayer game. The class-based squad shooting looks to combine the best of arcadey gameplay and tactical strategy. With an ambitious single player campaign, 8 maps that can support up to 32 players, and 5 game play modes, it's clear that Killzone 2 is going to offer a lot of bang for the buck. Too bad the wait until early next year is going to be intolerably long. Thankfully, the public beta, which will be available by year's end, will keep us satiated.

Just because no new exclusives (other than MAG) were announced at the Sony Press Conference doesn’t mean Sony wasn’t showing off new exclusive(s)

Myself, and Chris Rah Osiris witnessed a special closed door showing of new PS3 exclusive(s) in the works.

NDA’s were signed.

This is basically just a heads up to let the Sony fans out there know there is more on the way.


We were given a pretty in-depth walkthrough of the current state of Home, including a couple of game spaces (images of those later), during which we asked the bloke as many questions as we could think of. Top of our list? Making sure that we would be able to meet up with our friends all across the planet in the various public spaces. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Home's public spaces are going to be region-specific.

If you want to meet up with your pals from abroad, then you'll be able to invite them into your apartment, but warping into the game space to bowl or play chess is not possible. This is allegedly to make sure that each region receives an "experience most suited to their tastes" as well as, no doubt, to keep advertisers happy. The last thing they want is Europeans seeing an advert directed at Americans.


A carefully typed PowerPoint presentation had Jenova Chen's next PSN game's title as Flower. No, not flOwer, because that would suggest it was flOw+er, which would do an incredible disservice to this surprisingly ambitious title. Sure, there are a number of similarities between flOw and Flower: both use SIXAXIS tilt-controls, both are technically "single button games," and both fuse music and intuitive gameplay to evoke emotions rarely found in any other game. But, Flower does much more than we could have expected.

Jenova Chen described flOw as a gaming "haiku" -- but Flower is a "poem." It comes as an incredible surprise that Flower tells a story, told through the dreams of various flowers. When a player begins a new game, they aren't treated to lush green fields of grass. No, we see a colorless dying cityscape, one with a lone flower sitting in a cracked, dirty pot. Trigger a flower's dream, and we're treated to abstract watercolor paintings of a city that hint at a much bigger story.

So what's the gameplay like? You control a flower pedal, and you must tilt the PS3 controller to guide it to other flowers. It's a simple premise that's instantly accessible, but figuring out what must be done in each level requires exploration and experimentation. Each playthrough is meant to be a "performance," and players will want to tilt their controllers and create music through the various flowers in these fields. Each flower creates its own unique sound, depending on the background music, the speed of the wind and the player's timing. The mix of lush visuals and synesthetic gameplay is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Without a doubt, Flower is one of the most visually arresting games I have ever laid my eyes upon. The idyllic environments are rendered with such lush colors that it looks beyond real. Unlike in other games, the grass is not the background -- it is the canvas to the dance of the flowers in your control. Each blade of grass is rendered by the PS3, and thousands of blades swaying realistically in the wind is absolutely a technological accomplishment. There are various triggers in each level, which cause an explosion of flowers and color to fill the screen. Seeing the soft bloom of each flower in the mesmerizing movement of the grass lifts me up to a zen-like experience that surpasses anything flOw could have offered.

Yes, I admit there's a ton of fluff in this post. But of all the games I've seen at E3 so far (and there are a lot), this is the only game that's made me rush out to write a post with a full smile on my face. We've seen three levels so far, and each has felt very different. While all of the three we've seen have been serene so far, Jenova Chen assures us that there is quite a bit of challenge in Flower, and from what I've seen of the third level, we see hints at what Flower may become. There are still a lot of questions unanswered about thatgamecompany's latest ... but trust me when I say it is something you will definitely want to keep your eyes on.


We mentioned before that Rock Band 2 will allow players to "export most of the Rock Band disc tracks and upgrade them into Rock Band 2 gameplay." Most means not all. So what tracks are excluded? Joystiq got a chance to talk to senior designer Dan Teasdale, who said the final list of importable songs is still up in the air, due to licensing issues. Apparently Harmonix had to re-license all of the tracks from the first Rock Band. Sources are saying the number of songs excluded will probably be around 2 to 3. This is speculated to be caused by the new exclusivity deals with Guitar Hero: World Tour.

The official Rock Band 2 website has also been opened. No new information, but there are a couple of IM icons and wallpaper. The website also allows you to pre-order the game on the Xbox 360 on Amazon, but a quick look around also leads a pre-order for the PS3 version, including the Special Edition which includes the instruments. We did notice the Special Edition is has a release date listed as October 19th while the game by itself has it listed as November 30th, but these dates are probably inaccurate. The 360 Special Edition, which already has a confirmed release date of September, also has the release date listed as October here.


After Microsoft claimed that the introduction of Xbox Live avatars was a much fresher approach than the competition, Sony said Wednesday that Home is on track and trying to copy others is not its plan for the PlayStation 3.
“I don’t know enough about Microsoft’s avatars. I think we’re going in a bit of a different direction with Home. We made a line in the sand and made a strategic decision on Home and that’s where we’re going,” said SCEA president Jack Tretton.

“My understanding is that it’s a more simplified vision. That may be enough for some and not enough for others. We are who we are. You have to be who you are. You can’t backpedal down a road if it doesn’t appear it’s going to plan. You have to be aware of what’s not resounding with people.”

“We’ve got a plan for PS3. I think the worst thing we could do is look at the competition and try and do what they’re doing,” he said.


Here's another gameplay video of LittleBigPlanet. Pull up your favorite song to play alongside the video, since this footage decided to leave out any audio. It's possible there was a lot of background noise going on, so if that's the case, we're grateful for the silence. We're always impressed by the level designs that keep popping up and this video is no exception. Hopefully, you all agree!


It's called an alternate trailer, but really its a trailer with the same intro and then a completely different focus. Instead of staring at Chris Redfield's hair for two minutes, you see a woman dressed like a Greek goddess and a guy who took his wardrobe right from the Xenogears and Xenosaga dressing rooms. Then, around the one minute mark, it's the same ol' trailer from before. Enjoy!


For the first time, we get to see just exactly what happens when Sonic turns into his Werehog form in Sonic Unleashed. The blazing blue hero undergoes quite a transformation, not only physically, but also control/gameplay-wise. It seems platforming and combat are the strong points here, while Sonic's regular form will focus on speed. It's nice to finally see what the other half of Sonic Unleashed will look like. If you missed yesterday's interview on Joystiq, with US producer Patrick Riley, we suggest you check it out for more details on Sonic's Werehog form, nighttime stages, and more.


Sorry, Europe. The video store will be heading your way at some point in the future, but in the mean time you're going to have to live with without some awesome non-interactive downloadable content. The video store is ip locked to the US, which means that even if you set up a US account in Europe, you're going to be locked out. There are probably ways around it using proxies, but for most people that's going to be more hassle than it's worth.

The question is, if Sony can region lock the stores like this, why don't they? Surely it prevents cross-region purchases far better than just crying "don't do that!" On the other hand, it makes sense considering that the PS3 is region-free for Blu-ray games, but locked for Blu-ray movies. Maybe the game stores remain unlocked because they know what a shambles the EU Store is. Whatever the reason, we're glad for it. Hopefully we'll hear about the EU rollout for the video store soon.


Sony is looking to repeat the success it found with MLB 08 The Show with NBA 09 The Inside. The first-party basketball game is being handled by SCEA San Diego Studios -- the same team that took care of the well-received MLB 08. Sony revealed new screens and talk new details about this upcoming basketball game, scheduled for release on PS3 on October 7th.

1080p and 60fps are being promised yet again for this realistic-looking sports game. The Inside adds a new mode for the PS3, "The Life," which offers players the ability to see life inside the NBA through a story-based campaign. Franchise Mode is expanded upon greatly, with a new focus on performance and player morale. Stats will be tracked on a variety of levels, such as salary, playing time, trades, team performance

Other features include the return of NBA Replay, which allows players to relive great basketball performances from the '07-'08 season, and upcoming downloadable NBA games from the '08-'09 season. In addition to a boost in AI, online functionality will be expanded upon. Expect to easily show off customizable characters and improved leaderboards.

The graphics have, as expected, been improved, and Havok physics has been implemented as well. Two min-games will round out this incredibly fully-featured basketball package. Check out the first screens:


We teamed up with Joystiq's Chris Grant in a lengthy interview with Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida (full interview to come later in the week). One of the random details we stumbled upon was the fate of the long-forgotten PSN episodic title, Rat Race. He admitted earnestly: "So, yeah, we stopped it. We really liked the concept; it's like The Office TV series. It was kind of funny but we were not quite happy with how the game was turning out and there was some difficulty in development."

Remember the first footage of the game? Well, it wasn't too inspiring. Honestly, this isn't one we're going to regret losing.


We may have seen mostly single-player content of Sony's upcoming Killzone 2, but Guerrilla Games is promising a full-fledged multiplayer experience. Online play will allow players to customize their own characters by applying various traits, or "badges," from different multiplayer classes. There will be a primary and secondary badge available from each class to choose from. Also, although the Helghast and ISA look very different from each other, the effects of these badges are the same, regardless of which side you're playing on.

The default multiplayer character is assigned when no primary badge is selected. A secondary badge may still be added. Riflemen can start with most weapons, except for the specialized ones.


Primary badge ability: Sets up an automated turret which targets the enemy.

Secondary badge ability: Repairs ammunition dispensers, mounted guns, and automated turrets.


Primary badge ability: Revives downed team mates.

Secondary badge ability: Throws a health pack, which can be picked up by other players.


Primary badge ability: Uses a cloaking suit to become near-invisible.

Secondary badge ability: Tags all on-screen enemy players with a hidden marker, which broadcasts their coordinates to team mates.


Primary badge ability: Dons heavy armour twice as strong as normal.

Secondary badge ability: Temporarily boosts running speed.

Primary badge ability: Throws a coloured smoke grenade, which serves as a spawn point.

Secondary badge ability: Requests air support from a sentry bot which targets the enemy.


Primary badge ability: Assumes the disguise of a randomly selected enemy player.

Secondary badge ability: Throws a sticky, proximity-activated C-4 charge.


We've known for some time now that Naughty Dog's incredible fan-favorite Uncharted is getting Trophy support via an upcoming patch. However, we haven't heard of a time frame ... until now. An interview with Joystiq reveals that the patch was "incredibly easy" to implement because the game "already contains preliminary support fro Trophies via its Medals rewards system." However, don't expect to get any Trophies retroactively ... you're going to have to earn them all over again. (Considering how good the game is, we won't complain!)

Interestingly, Naughty Dog's Evan Wells included these "hooks" for Trophy support because the team believed Sony would implement the feature before the launch of Uncharted last November. Guess those guys were a bit too foward-thinking. Regardless, we can't wait to boost our PlayStation Level.

This is Playstation Access 100th post. This is a great landmark to encouter and we like to take the time to thank all of our dedicate readers cause without you Playstation Access would not exist. Anyways we have great news from Sony!

Sony today announced MAG (Massive Action Game), a game that features 256 player online. Players will be placed into squads of eight. The game will reportedly allow for character growth, making sure to push players in certain directions to keep the action from becoming chaotic. The game will also reportedly have ongoing campaigns.

The game is being made by Zipper Interactive, the same developer that is currently making SOCOM: Confrontation for the PS3.

The trailer which gripped Playstation Portable fans during Sony's E3 press conference for Resistance Retribution has now been made available on the internet thanks to GameTrailers.com.

As previously mentioned, the gameplay looks largely 3rd person, unlike the main franchise which is 1st person.

CEO of SCEA Jack Tretton talks up PS3’s power as he shoots down this week’s big rumour
Following fervent speculation that Metal Gear Solid 4 would follow Final Fantasy in becoming a PlayStation-associated brand that moves onto Xbox 360, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has argued no other console could handle the technical demands of Konami’s the Konami title.

Speaking to assembled press at the platform holder's conference in LA earlier today, Tretton added that the Blu-Ray capabilities of PS3 had already seen of HD-DVD – and would now see off the company’s console competition.

“PS3 offers an experience for both gamers and developers no other console can match,” he said.

“Metal Gear Solid is not only exclusive on PS3 – it’s only possible on PS3, thanks in part to Blu-Ray.“

He added: "PS3 drove the Blu-Ray format to victory and now the Blu-Ray format is poised to return the favour.”


Not the trailer kids, just the struggle for mankind. At least in the Resistance 2 universe. The first video features the Chicago level. The Goliath destroys a helicopter and rockets launchers don't seem to affect the big guy. After trying to avoid the beast, it picks Hale up, and flings him right into a building. Another trailer shown at E3 after the jump.

Above is the video Sony just showed at E3 for your viewing pleasure. The first trailer is rather morbid, with a radio broadcast forecasting an end to humanity. Watch for the rather cool-looking alien spaceships on display at the end as well.


New core configuration this fall with 80GB hard drive. Same as the current 40GB SKU with twice the hard drive. This will also include a DualShock 3 controller.


Even though Activision is not going to be on E3 this year, they have confirmed 5 game titles that will be coming out this year. In this list includes the much anticipated Call of Duty: World At War and Spiderman: Web of Shadows.

As we joined EA yesterday, for their Media Press Briefing, I was extraordinarily excited when I saw the game montage video they played on the big screen. In the trailer they showed, I saw previews of Sims Animal for the Wii, Dead Space for the XBOX 360 and PS3, and various other games.


An interview on Joystiq unveiled many juicy tidbits about the upcoming Sonic console game known as Sonic Unleashed. A number of new revelations have been mentioned, including that the game will also take players to China and Africa in addition to revealed stages Greece and "Europe." There will only be one other playable character which is used briefly for short sections (like mini-games) as the game is played for "99% Sonic in his two forms" (regular and Werehog).

The most striking details come from the day and night gameplay. Nighttime stages, the time when Sonic transforms into a Werehog, will appear in some stages as both real-time day-to-night changes and also fixed night or day stages. One last tasty morsel is info on a demo: "Yes, the current plan is to release a playable demo shortly before or right around release." some odd reason. We say there's nothing to be that bummed out about at all. Besides, it's time to suck it up, accept it, and get over it. The best way to 'get over it' is to get back to looking at all the game's that are still exclusive to our platform of choice, specifically: Resistance 2 and inFAMOUS.

That's right, based on these new E3 trailers, there's still enough sweet exclusivity to keep you all satisfied. Also, Bioshock (previously a 360 exclusive) has come over to the Sony-side -- it's a trade-off. Embedded is the trailer for Resistance 2; Bioshock and inFAMOUS are after the break.

According to the Official Playstation Blog, Warhawk v1.4 will be released on July 16 @ 3:00AM PST. Along with this release, a new gameplay modes will be available for download that can be used in every map including the booster packs.

The new modes are known as Hero & Collection Modes.

The Hero mode is a team-based game where one player will be randomly selected to be the Hero. Other team must kill the Hero to earn points. As for the Hero’s team getting points, the selected Hero must be the one who must kill the other team players to score a point.

The Collection Mode is basically a multi flag CTF. There are 4 energy cores scattered around the map, generally positioned in the center or between the 2 team’s main bases. Each team has a Reactor where Energy Cores are taken to score points.


According to our partner @ Playstation Lifestyle, there was a hidden feature on the firmware that was recently released on the PSP that wasn’t documented on the list. It seems that the firmware 4.05 has a feature that can play movie and TV shows downloaded from the Playstation Store.

Of course we won’t know anything about this until tomorrow. We’ll see how Sony will pull it off tomorrow!


All Resident Evil fans rejoice! The Resident Evil 5 trailer is finally here, and it’s looking better than ever. Capcom has definitely outdone themselves this time. And lets not forget the best surprise of all, zombie bikers!


Following its major announcement of Final Fantasy 13 for Xbox 360 at Microsoft's press conference, Square Enix held a press conference to field questions about the announcement. One of the interesting points made was that development of the Xbox 360 version of the game won't begin until the PS3 version has been completed.
"We're ready to start developing FF13 for 360," said Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto. "First, we will complete the game for PS3 in Japan, then begin localization for America and Europe while developing the 360 version simultaneously. The PS3 and 360 versions will be released at the same time outside of Japan -- although, due to language and other conditions, the game may not be released simultaneously across territories."

This clarifies the announcement from Square Enix earlier today; Final Fantasy 13 will be available simultaneously with the PS3 in North America and Europe, even though their release dates may not be the same.

Sony published a mysterious teaser on the SonyStyle home page for a new product that will be announced on Monday July 14th, 9pm EST.

The image used shows a green lit power button somewhat reminding me on the Xbox 360 power button.
The brief tag lines talk about style, performance and mobility redefined.

I could imagine Sony is introducing an Intel Atom based netbook. The three tag lines would fit to such a product. The big power button is a bit confusing, but this might just be a close-up of a small button.

Yeah, we can complain about Final Fantasy XIII's move to Xbox 360. But let's not forget two important things: it's still coming out on PS3, and it's still the same beautiful game we've all wanted. Here's the E3 trailer that was on display, filled with all sorts of new footage that hasn't ever been seen before. Of course, now that it's not a PS3 exclusive, maybe you think this looks worse? Another week of lackluster releases today. Only Japan has anything to write home about, with a standalone Metal Gear Online pack and Tears To Tiara, a Strategy RPG that was originally released on the PC. No actual software for Europeans, unfortunately, just wireless buzzers for Buzz! which ... is kind of pointless, if you've already grabbed Buzz! Quiz TV. At leas you can also use them with the PS2 versions of the games. Here's the full release list:

This E3 2008 will start from 15th to the 17th of july with the three big conferences from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. This year the show is back to the Los Angeles Convetion Center, unfortunatly ther wont be any big show like previously but a small hall to play some new games and a bunch of closed doors. And as you can see, there is no ads on the LACC.

Here's a nifty feature some of you have been looking forward to -- an official way to display your PSN ID on various websites. Obviously, you will need to have a PSN account. You will also need to sign up for a PlayStation Underground account as well if you do not already have one. Linking to the two of them together will allow you access to the PLAYSTATION Network portable ID. The PSN portable ID "is a visual summary of your PLAYSTATION®Network account, including your Avatar, "About Me" message and Online ID." There is even an HTML code provided for you to display this information wherever you please.

You can also now access your Friend List via the PSU -- in addition to the information on their portable ID, you will see their online status. If online, you can view their comment/status and what game they are currently playing. If they are offline, you can see when they were last online. At this time, you cannot manage your Friend List via the PSU.


Things don't look too different from the original in this first gameplay trailer of Rock Band 2. Sure, there are some more ... psychedelic elements to the visuals, and Everlong by the Foo Fighters. Though with 17 of the songs from the impressive leaked tracklist having been correct so far, more of the same isn't going to bother too many of you.

Downloaded Warhawk unlocked for other profiles in v2.41 , maybe nobody noticed yet , but i have accidentaly runned Warhawk using other then the profile which was the owner of the game, and horay, it works !

Still gaming’s biggest event, E3 takes hold of Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony as they try and tell the world that their console is the one to get. But of course, in order to buy a console, the games have to be good, and by god, these games are good. We’ve compiled a list of games that we are most anticipating seeing and playing at this year’s E3.

Fallout 3

Bethesda Softworks has been quiet on the Fallout 3 front. A couple of screenshots here and there have surfaced lately, and only a select few people have seen this game in action, TGR included. But all that is about to change, as Bethesda has promised a massive blowout at this year’s E3. A new gameplay trailer and the promise of hands-on demos for the media means Fallout 3 will at last be getting the exposure everyone wants. From the developers of the amazing Oblivion, Fallout 3 promises to be a premier RPG and a candidate for game of the year.

Resident Evil 5

The Resident Evil series is one the most loved out there. Capcom’s survival horror games have sold millions across multiple consoles and has created many stand-out moments across the whole franchise and quite possibly, with Resident Evil 4, one of the best games in the last ten years. So it’s no surprise that Resident Evil 5 is one of the most anticipated games out there at the moment; the game is set hot and humid country of Africa and looks beautiful. With fan favorite Chris Redfield back as the lead character, many people, including us, are waiting anxiously to see the next chapter in this legendary saga. With the release of the latest trailer only adding more fuel to our desire, Capcom promises a big Resident Evil 5 announcement and more gameplay footage. We can’t wait.
Gears of War 2

We all knew it was coming. It was inevitable that Gears of War, one of the best selling games on the Xbox 360 and most played on Xbox Live, would be getting a sequel, and at this year’s GDC, Cliff Blezsinski chainsawed his way into Microsoft’s press conference and announced that Gears of War 2 would be shipping this November. Since then, the internet has been alight with Gears joy. "Bigger, Better and More Badass" is the saying, and from the videos we’ve seen, the phrase holds its own. With a longer storyline, updated graphics, bigger multiplayer, and lots more of those awesome executions, Gears 2 might once again set the bar higher for every game out there and that’s why we can’t wait to see more of this beast at this year’s E3.

Fable 2

Fable promised so much and was hyped by game development guru and Fable creator Peter Molyneux, but when it was released, it failed to deliver on some of the promises Mr. Molyneux spoke off. Fable 2 is just around the corner and again promising to be bigger and better, and is near the top of everyone’s list. Developed at Lionhead Studios in the UK, Fable 2 is one of Microsoft’s heavy hitters come this holiday and with so much potential, eager gamers are dying to get there hands on it. This could be one of the best games of the show at E3, and you can bet your last dollar that TGR will be right at the front of the queue to play this game.

Killzone 2

Anyone remember that infamous E3 2005 trailer of Killzone 2 that Sony said was in-game but turned out to be pre-rendered? From the latest videos doing the rounds on the Web, it’s not looking too far off from that infamous trailer, not to far at all. Killzone 2 is still being hyped by the Sony crowd as their "Halo Killer," but it’s shown itself as a largely new experience for shooter fans. Early signs show this may yet be the great shooter everyone’s hoping it will be, and with it playable at this E3, we will finally know if the hype is justified.


If you are looking for the most original, most creative, and most ridiculously cute upcoming game, then look no further than this peach of a title. LittleBigPlanet is all about the user: create your own levels, and play and share them with the world with the only limitations being that of your imagination (and the contents of your hard drive). With so much creative freedom, it’s no wonder many PS3 owners are looking forward to this game. The game oozes originality, which is something that is lacking in some games you see today. LittleBigPlanet is one of Sony’s main games coming this fall, and we’re sure that this game will be one E3’s highlight games.
